Company Background

Royal Canin was born in 1967 on the edge of the Camargues, in a little village in the Gard, perched on one of the lowest foothills of the Cévennes. The Mediterranean ripples on the horizon. 
At its head in the early years was Jean Cathary, a country vet who first turned his hand to something completely new four years earlier, when he began manufacturing dry food for cats and dogs.  
Since then, the story of Royal Canin has been one of lightning acceleration.
Remaining faithful to its philosophy of Lean Production, Royal Canin has concentrated all its business activities on the same site.

A deep-rooted commitment to always respond better to the true nutritional needs of dogs and cats, and push back the frontiers of Health Nutrition.

1967
Creation by a veterinary surgeon.Since the beginning, the development of the brand has been firmly rooted with the prescribers, and primarily the breeders.

1980
Launch of AGR, the first food for large breed puppies and the first “cynotechnic” range dedicated to breeders.

1990
Development of RCCI (Royal Canin Cynotechnique International) : a« premium nutrition» range for puppies and adult dogs, including notably AGR 36 (Large Breed Puppy Food), which became a world benchmark, and PR27, the first food especially for small breed dogs. 
   
1997 
RCCI Size : the first nutritional program for dogs according to age, activity and size differences. This revolutionary concept discovered by Royal Canin, defined Size (small breeds: 1-10kg, medium breeds 11-25kg, large breeds over 25kg) and in just three years forced other world players to put Canine Nutrition at the top of the agenda. 
World first, RCFI (Royal Canin Felinotechnique Internationale) : first generation of nutritional cat foods adapted to the age and physiological state of the cat. 

1998 
VET CAT：first Nutritional programme in the world for castrated male and sterilised female cats, exclusive to the veterinary profession. 

1999
PERSIAN 30 : 
resulting from collaboration between Research & Development and breeders, the first food specially adapted to the physiognomy and the specific needs of Persian cats:
     Perfection of the Almond 11 kibble 
     Derm System (beauty of the skin and the coat) 
     Hairball Transit System (facilitating the elimination of ingested hairballs). 
    Creation of STARTER : launch of the first weaning puppy food for breeders.
    Launch of VET SIZE :the first nutritional program for small, medium and large breed dogs, dedicated to the veterinary channel.

2000
Launch of SIZE NUTRITION : three nutritional program adapted to the specific needs and characteristics of small, medium and large breed dogs.

2001
V-DIET, to Feed and Cure : the launch of 13 dietetic foods for dogs and cats.
Launch of GIANT : the first nutritional program for giant breed dogs (over 45 kg).
Global launch of INDOOR 27 ® : the first food for indoor cats.

2002
4 worldwide breakthroughs in the new Feline Nutrition range : reinforcing natural defences, fighting cell ageing, regenerating skin and hair, made-to-measure kibble texture. 
    VET CAT NEUTERED : a new generation of super-prevention nutritional foods, which take into account the specific physiological characteristics of sterilised female and castrated male cats. 
    Launch of MEDIUM IMMUNITY PROGRAM : first immunity program for medium size dogs, which helps strengthen the dog’s natural defenses at each stage of its life.
    Launch of MINI YORKSHIRE : the first ever made-to-measure food for the Yorkshire Terrier. 

2003
Launch of MAINE COON 31, SIAMESE 38 and PERSIAN 30 :the first ever made-to-measure food to meet the nutritional needs of these three pure breed cats.
Launch of VETERINARY DIET : a dietetic range of 18 dry foods and 18 moist foods for dogs and cats combining prevention and treatment, the product of liaison between the Research Centres of Royal Canin and Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition.
